Comparing Carbohydrate Requirements for the Atkins Diet and the Food Pyramid Guide ââ¬Å"Carbohydrates are an organic compound that serves as a major energy source for the bodyâ⬠(Dictionary.com). These carbohydrates convert to sugars that trigger insulin production, which our body needs for certain processes, and triggers fat storage (Health-Doc.com). According to the Institute of Medicine, adults should get 45 to 65 percent of their calories from carbohydrates. That is roughly seven servings based on a 2000 calorie diet. At least one of the two carbohydrate diet plans states something different. The Atkins diet requires a limited amount of carbohydrates for consumption while the Food Pyramid Guide developed by USDA and supported by the Department of Health and Human Services allows for many more servings. The Atkins diet requires that in the first two weeks of the diet you eat no more than twenty grams of carbohydrates a day.
